Emily Walker

Emily Walkner had been experiencing some pretty severe back pain for quite some time. Walking became difficult, as did just sitting and driving. She is the Director of Rooms for a hotel and lots of movement is a part of her daily routine. “I would leave work and cry all the way home because I was in so much pain, my co-workers would even joke with me and say they were going to get me a wheelchair for work.” Leisure activities became difficult as well. She stated, “my daughter would be embarrassed to go to the mall with me because I just couldn’t walk properly.”...

...Emily saw various doctors, until she was finally referred to an Orthopedic doctor by her family physician who ordered an MRI. The MRI results revealed that she needed surgery. “I did not feel comfortable with this doctor,” Emily states, and that’s when she received a call from Hostcare Resources explaining the medical travel option offered through her employer’s self- funded insurance plan. “Hostcare Resources called me and explained how everything works and I kept asking, ‘are you sure?’ It was just too good to be true.” Hostcare began coordinating her appointments with the surgeon and the facility for an added option. She was immediately impressed and comfortable with the surgeon and his recommendation for a spine surgery.

Hostcare arranged all the medical travel arrangements, including hotel stay, coordinated the appointments and surgery date and times with the doctor’s office and surgery facility’s staff. Emily was impressed at how friendly the entire staff was from the front desk to the medical team. “They explained everything. They know what they are doing!” She was equally as impressed with her hotel stay, going on to explain that she didn’t have to worry about a thing. “Everything was taken care of for me.” Emily becomes emotional just talking about her experience. She would think to herself that there’s no way another company could take care of somebody else like this, with so much caring and thought. “What most impressed me is that Hostcare really cares about the patient and offered me an option to see the best doctor I’ve ever met.”

Her recovery went smoothly and life after surgery has been pain free for her. She even took a trip to visit Egypt, Japan, and Korea. “I walked and walked on my trip without pain.” She added, “Even my co-workers say to me, ‘Emily, you’re walking straight!’” She is so grateful to Hostcare Resources for this option, but most importantly, for the care and thoughtfulness that was shown throughout the entire process.



Steve Miller

Steve Miller has always had an active lifestyle, enjoying sports and outdoor activities. Steve began to experience neck and shoulder pain on and off almost 20 years ago but the last couple of years the pain became more intense in his shoulder. An MRI revealed he had a herniated disc in his spine.  After physical therapy and injections did not help the pain, he was referred to a Neurosurgeon who recommended either a fusion or a disc replacement.  “I wasn’t too confident in the surgeon- I would ask him, ‘if this were you which one would you pick?" Steve says the previous specialist would not give him a direct answer making him a little hesitant...

...From the very beginning, Steve was impressed with the neurosurgeon presented to him through Hostcare Resources’ medical travel options. During the consultation, he and his wife both learned more about his back condition than ever before and the second opinion helped identify that a spinal fusion was needed. On their way home from the appointment, they contacted Hostcare to identify what they needed to do next because they were ready to schedule the surgery date.

Just as promised, Hostcare assisted with setting the surgery date, took care of the lodging needs and provided them with mileage reimbursement plus a daily travel allowance. He says he is amazed at how well everything went, “the company went above and beyond.” Steve says the medical facility was, “top notch- very clean, very organized.” He was very confident in the surgeon’s abilities and says, “Everything the doctor told me to expect is what happened, the pain level was what he said to expect and three days after the surgery, my shoulder pain was gone.” He adds, “things went better than I could’ve imagined- I couldn’t be more happy.”

Today, Steve says he is able to sleep much better and that he has regained range of motion in his head, neck, and shoulders. “I’m looking forward to playing ball and catch with my kids when its warmer,” says Steve. He doesn’t anticipate that he will be held back from anything active. Steve says that he would recommend Hostcare services to others, and is even forwarding their information pamphlet to his company’s corporate department. “They mean what they say and do what they say. If it seems too good to be true, it’s not!” Steve is very thankful to Hostcare Resources and says, “no one likes to have surgery and they made the experience as pain-less as possible.”



Josette Abrams

Josette Abrams has always been a very active person, so when she started to experience pain in her right knee that hindered her work outs she knew it was time to get it checked.  She had previously undergone a total left knee replacement, so she knew the signs.  Her doctor took x-rays which showed that she had some degeneration and it was basically, bone on bone. Josette liked her doctor and had no reserves about getting her surgery scheduled.  Then, she received a call from Hostcare Resources.  “I didn’t think it was for real,” says Josette.   She states that she really connected with her doctor, who had previously performed a rotator cuff surgery for her and she just really wasn’t interested in the Hostcare option.  Hostcare explained they would make sure to find a great doctor and her employer also encouraged the benefit.  Although she was really apprehensive about the whole thing, she thought, “What do I have to lose?” and decided to meet with the surgeon Hostcare recommended...

...…Hostcare arranged a consultation between Josette and the surgeon. Josette says that she really connected with the surgeon and was impressed with the surgeon, staff, and facility. What was most impressive to Josette was that the surgeon didn’t push the surgery. Josette states, “I thought he would push it, but he didn’t.” She says that it wasn’t just about getting business for them, they do care about the patient and what they want. Josette firmly believes that it is important to make a connection with the doctor who is treating you. She decided to go through with the surgery and take advantage of the Hostcare benefit.”

“It was a very personal experience,” explains Josette. The surgeon, staff, and facility were all great according to Josette and she was blown away by the personal care and touch she received from the medical staff and Hostcare- everyone was very approachable and easy to access. Josette says that Host care made all the arrangements and she didn’t have to worry about making calls and appointments. “Everything got done so quickly… I felt like I was going on a trip!” says Josette.

According to Josette, the best parts of the Hostcare option were the personal care she received, being aligned with the right doctor, ease of just showing up because all the arrangements were made, and the financial aspect of lodging and food being taken care of for you. She has already recommended Hostcare to a colleague and says she would definitely recommend to others.

Josette is feeling better and back to keeping active. It was an adjustment during her recovery and had to keep on top of her therapy, which she believes, that along with a great surgeon, is the key to recovering fully. Today she is back to doing everything and enjoys Zumba, Spinning, Weight Training, and Yoga!



Michael Mehling

Michael Mehling suffered a bad skiing accident in 1989 that left him with lingering knee problems for many years. Michael states that this incident left him “hobbling around.” A local doctor recommended Michael undergo a total knee replacement. As soon as Michael knew the surgery was necessary, he called his medical concierge who directed him to Hostcare Resources to see if his surgery met the added benefit’s criteria. ...was having to travel for the surgery. Those concerns were soon put to rest, as Michael says he felt the best doctor and location were chosen. Michael was impressed with the entire process and says everything went like clockwork- from the time he left his home, to the operation, to returning home. His recovery went better than expected and Michael says he was even walking the same day he had surgery! Initially, Michael had concerns staying in a hotel, but he says, “the hotel was beautiful, it met all our needs, and my wife and I even enjoyed getting away.” ​ Michael is now able to walk without any trouble and enjoys walking to the park. Michael’s initial reservations about Hostcare completely changed and he says, “ I would do it again, I was well taken care of by Hostcare and the Hospital.”



Gwen Bell

Gwen Bell was told she would need to have a partial knee replacement.  “I was diagnosed a year and a half prior to having the surgery, I babied it for a long time.” The pain had become constant and Gwen knew it was time to consider the surgery.  She knew the surgery would be expensive with insurance out of pocket costs and a high deductible. “I first learned about Hostcare at an insurance meeting, during open enrollment.  I thought, this can’t be true!”  Although, it seemed too good to be true, Gwen contacted Hostcare Resources. ...the surgeon was highly recommended and impressive and the monetary savings was remarkable.

Gwen was thoroughly impressed with the entire process. “I was sent the doctor’s biography and an itinerary- everything was spelled out nicely.” Gwen says Hostcare was on top of everything, but not just Hostcare, the doctor’s office was just as efficient. “There was a great flow, everyone was on it, and they were familiar with Hostcare, which was great!” Gwen’s surgery also went smoothly. She says her recovery lined up with everything the doctor told her to expect and she was back to normal within 3 ½ weeks!

After Gwen’s knee was well on its way to healing, she saw a local foot and ankle doctor about painful bulgy ankles that would wake her at night. The physician explained her condition, but he did not take any x-rays. Gwen was given cortisone injections to both ankles to help with the pain and inflammation, however, she had very little relief. When Gwen inquired about surgically treating her condition, her physician stated he could operate. Gwen decided to contact Hostcare since she had such a great experience with the surgeon who performed her knee surgery. Gwen says, “Hostcare was great, they got right on it and I went for the second opinion.” Extensive x-rays were taken and Gwen was informed that the surgery the other doctor was willing to perform would provide her with no relief. “I am flat-footed-very little arch and have walked this way all my life,” states Gwen. The surgery to correct Gwen’s condition would be extensive, painful, and require many weeks of no walking. This doctor suggested Gwen try an orthotic, since he has many patients who have gotten relief from an orthotic vs surgery. Gwen was given the script and sent to an orthotic and prosthetic company where she received an estimate and found out how expensive it would be.  When Gwen spoke with Hostcare after her appointment, she was told that Hostcare might be able to help in getting a discount for the orthotic. “I got the estimate to Hostcare and within a couple of days after working with my insurance company they were able to get the orthotics for me for FREE! I still cannot believe it.” 

Gwen is just blown away and surprised with Hostcare. She says the care taken with every detail of travel was incredibly generous. “I am so thankful for this benefit,” she says.



Dick Pyle

Dick Pyle underwent a total knee replacement for both knees, only six weeks apart! The problem with his left knee began about 30 years ago. Dick explains that he jogged a lot back then and had to stop jogging because of the pain. He found himself taking Advil regularly after playing golf to help with the pain and even maintenance projects around the house became increasingly difficult. “I could only stand 20 minutes at a time, I became very inactive,” states Dick. He saw a few doctors over the course of this time and even received gel shots, but when those wore off he knew it was only temporary relief and that it was time to schedule a surgery.

...“this is the way insurance is supposed to be.” Dick says he never really had any doubts and his only concern was being able to evaluate the Hostcare recommended surgeon in a 20-minute doctor visit. Dick says researching this new surgeon and asking a lot of questions really helped, as well as the time and care Hostcare gave. According to Dick, “the process in place was remarkable – all the people involved in the surgery came and talked with us, it was thorough.” He also says the doctors were honest and realistic with what to expect.

It has now been six months since his second surgery and he has no pain, does almost anything he wants and is even golfing again! Dick says he has already shared this experience with other people. “If people are worried about something going wrong, they are worrying about the wrong things.” He says Hostcare made him feel comfortable and supported, they were honest and proactive, and followed up.
